The 3am pillow pile

One between the knees, one hugged to the chest, one wedged behind the back. Side sleepers build the same nest every night, and every night it comes apart. By 3am half of it is on the floor, you are twisted, and you are awake enough to notice.

This is one object instead of three. It cannot migrate, because there is nothing to separate — you turn over and it comes with you.

It is a U, not a long bolster

Worth being clear about the shape, because it is the whole point. This is a full horseshoe: closed and rounded at the top, with two long padded sides running down from it and an open gap between them.

You lie inside it. The closed curve goes under your head. One side sits in front of you to hug, the other stays down your back. A straight bolster gives you one of those at a time and asks you to choose. This gives you both without turning over.

Why the gap between your knees matters

Lie on your side with nothing between your knees and the upper leg drops forward and rolls the pelvis with it, for however many hours you are asleep. Fill that gap and the leg stays where you put it and the hips stay stacked. It is a positioning effect, not a treatment — if you have persistent back, hip or neck pain, that is a conversation for a doctor or a physiotherapist, not a pillow.

Sleeping on your side while pregnant

Later on, side sleeping is usually what you are steered towards, and your midwife or doctor is the right person to tell you what is right for you and your pregnancy. What a pillow can do is make that position easier to hold for a whole night.

The side in front of you gives the bump something to rest against instead of dragging, the same side lower down fills the gap between your knees, and the side behind your back means you are propped from both directions rather than balancing. Hugging it also makes rolling flat onto your back less likely — a prompt, not a restraint. You can still turn.

The cover comes off

Which matters more on something this size than on an ordinary pillow — a big pillow you cannot wash is a big pillow you throw away. The cover slides off and goes in the wash; air the inner pillow rather than putting the whole thing through a domestic machine. Fair warning from people who own one: getting the cover back on takes a bit of wrestling.

Not only for pregnancy

A good number of the people who buy this one are nowhere near pregnant. Side sleepers who are tired of the knee pillow escaping. People recovering from a hip or shoulder operation who need the arm and the leg held up. Anyone propped up in bed to read or watch something, with the two sides running forward under their elbows. And it carries on being useful after a birth, for feeding support and for sitting up at odd hours.

How much bed it takes

A full U sits alongside you rather than under you, so it wants your width plus a margin on each side. On a king that is a non-issue. On a double shared with another adult it is tight — that is the honest answer, and it is the most common complaint about every pillow in this shape, ours included.

Exact dimensions are the one thing worth checking before you order. Message us and we will measure one for you rather than quote you a number off a supplier sheet.

What arrives

Frequently asked questions

Is it U-shaped or a straight body pillow?

A full U. Closed and rounded at the top, two long padded sides running down from it, open between them. You lie inside it rather than beside it.

What do the colour names mean?

The cover is two-tone, and the name is the outer face first, then the inner face. Violet/Blue is violet on the outside and pale blue on the inside; Pink/Violet is pink outside, violet inside; Blue/Pink is blue outside, pink inside. You see both colours either way round.

Will it help my back pain?

It holds your upper leg and your upper arm up instead of letting them drop across you, which is what most side sleepers are actually after. That is a positioning effect. It is a pillow, not a treatment — for persistent back, neck or joint pain, see a doctor or a physiotherapist.

Can I use it while pregnant?

It is one of the main reasons people buy this shape — it supports the bump in front and the knees below from a single piece. Follow your own midwife or doctor on how you should be sleeping; the pillow's job is only to make that position comfortable enough to stay in.

Will it fit a double bed I share?

It will be tight. A U-shaped pillow needs the width of one sleeper plus a margin either side, and on a double with two adults that margin comes out of the other person's half. On a king it is comfortable for both of you.

How do I wash it?

Take the cover off and wash the cover. Air the inner pillow rather than putting the whole thing in a domestic machine — it is too big to come out of one properly dry.

Is it firm or soft?

Soft enough to hug and squash under your head, with enough body left to hold the gap between your knees. A pillow that flattens completely does not do the second job at all.

Can I still use it after the birth?

Plenty of people do — for feeding support, and for propping themselves up in bed. Nothing about it is specific to pregnancy.
