Most skull masks are a face. This one is a head.

The cheap ones are a flat front shell on an elastic strap. They sit on your face like a plate, the back of your head is still obviously your head, and the whole illusion dies the moment you turn around.

This is a soft latex shell that pulls on over your entire head. The cranium is sculpted all the way round — domed brainpan, hairline suture seams tracking across it, a heavy brow ridge, cheekbones that sweep back into real temples. From behind, you are still a skeleton.

The jaw is the reason to buy it

The lower jaw is not moulded into the face. It is a separate piece, hinged at both sides at roughly the point where a real jaw joint sits, so it swings.

Your own chin sits inside it. Open your mouth and the mandible drops with you. Close it and the teeth come back together. Talk, and the skull talks.

There is nothing to switch on. No batteries, no motor, no remote. That is the trick, not a shortcoming — an animatronic jaw runs on a trigger and always lags a beat behind the voice. This one cannot lag, because it is your jaw.

What it is actually like to wear

Full-head masks are usually sold on the photo and never on the experience, which is why so many of them get returned. Here is the honest version.

You see through the eye sockets. There is no mesh and no lens — the sockets are open. Forward vision is clear and the two openings are set wide, but they are still two holes in a shell. You lose most of your peripheral view. Turn your head instead of your eyes, look at the ground before you step off a kerb, and do not drive or ride in it.

You hear normally. The shell opens at the nape and your ears sit at the edge of it rather than sealed under it, so conversation works — which matters more than people expect at a crowded party.

It gets warm. The open nape and the open mouth give air a route in and out, so it is not stifling. But it is still latex wrapped round your whole head: wear it under indoor lights for a stretch and you will want it off for a few minutes. Plan for breaks. Everyone in this category needs them.

Two finishes, two completely different effects

Aged Bone is warm — ivory and tan with brown weathering pushed down into the sutures, the eye sockets and the back of the cranium. It reads as something dug up. It is the one that looks best in warm, low, uneven light: porch lanterns, firelight, a dim hallway.

Bone White is cool and near-chalk, with only soft grey settling into the recesses. It reads as an anatomical specimen rather than a relic. It holds far more contrast in the dark, so it is the one that still reads clearly from across a room or under a single porch light.

Fit

It is a one-size pull-on shell with the opening at the nape. Latex stretches, so it goes over the head and then settles back against it — this is why there is no strap and no buckle to adjust.

We do not have a manufacturer head-circumference figure for this particular mask, so we are not going to invent one. If you have an unusually large head, or a lot of hair to get inside it, treat that as the open question and try it on well before the night itself rather than an hour before you leave.

Latex — read this before you order

The shell is latex, and it rests directly against the skin of your face, forehead and scalp for the whole time you are wearing it. There is no fabric liner between you and the material.

If you have a latex allergy or a known latex sensitivity, do not buy this mask. If you are unsure, hold it against the inside of your forearm for a few minutes and check for a reaction before you ever put it on your face.

Adults only

This is a full-head mask that encloses the head and cuts down peripheral vision. It is not a children's product, it is not sized for children, and it is not intended for them. Keep it away from small children entirely, including as something to play with when nobody is wearing it.

Look after it and it comes back next year

Latex takes a crease and keeps it, so store the mask loosely stuffed or sitting on something head-shaped rather than folded flat in a box. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators — heat and UV are what age latex, not use. Wipe the inside with a damp cloth after a long night and let it dry completely before it goes away.

What you get

  • One full-head skull mask with a movable lower jaw
  • In your choice of Aged Bone or Bone White

That is the whole order. No hood, no neck gaiter, no costume, no bundle. Where our photographs show a black covering at the neck, that is the wearer's own clothing and is not included.

Questions people ask first

Does the jaw move by itself?

No, and that is deliberate. It moves because your chin moves it. There is no power, no switch and nothing to charge or replace.

Can I see well enough to walk around a party?

Forward, yes. Peripherally, no — you are looking through two eye sockets. Move a little more deliberately than usual and turn your head to check beside you. Do not drive in it.

Will it fit over my glasses?

We do not have a measured answer for this and would rather say so than guess. The sockets are open and reasonably deep, but frame width varies enormously. Try it at home first.

Does it really cover the back of my head?

Yes. The cranium is sculpted all the way round and the shell closes over the crown and the back of the skull, with the opening at the nape of your neck.

Is it latex?

Yes. Please read the latex warning above before you order — the material sits directly against your face.

Can my child wear it?

No. It is an adult costume mask, not a children's toy, and it should not be worn by children.
